Identity Verification for UK Company Directors

Identity Verification for UK Company Directors – Coming November 2025

From 3 November 2025, a major legal reform takes effect for UK businesses. Every company director and Person with Significant Control (PSC) will need to verify their identity with Companies House under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023.

This is part of a nationwide initiative to improve corporate transparency, reduce financial crime, and build greater trust in the UK business system.

What’s Changing

  • All directors and PSCs must verify their identity to continue acting in those roles.

  • The new verification process applies to both existing and newly appointed directors.

  • Failure to comply could result in penalties or removal from company records.

Why This Matters

The government’s goal is clear: to make it harder for people to hide behind fake names or shell companies. This change also strengthens HMRC’s ability to combat fraud and improve tax compliance.
