Remaining tax deadlines 2017: stick them in the diary

With the summer slowly drawing to a close, we thought it’d be a good time to make sure you’re aware of all the important tax deadlines remaining between now and the end of January, 2018. MAF customers will, of course, be notified in good time and we’ll be helping you to fill out all the important paperwork. In the meantime, here are a few things worth remembering.

Submitting tax returns for 2017

October 31, 2017

If you still work with paper tax returns, the deadline is only a matter of weeks away. Remember that these self-assessment returns relate to the April 2016 to April 2017 tax year and they need to arrive with HMRC on or before October 31, so sending them on that day won’t wash.

However, you can rest assured that this is not the day for paying up. The deadline for handing over your cash is not until January 31, 2018.

October 31 is also the deadline for applying for a UTR (unique tax reference number), so if you’ve yet to sort one of these out (and you’ll need one to submit your returns in any case), then get in contact with an accountant as soon as you can. (MAFters are given these during the sign-up period, so if you’re already with us you will have what is required.)

December 30, 2017

Do you file your tax return online, but also have earnings taxed under PAYE? If the latter is less than £2,000, then you can opt to have it collected as ‘overdue tax’, as long as you apply for it by this date. The benefit of this that any tax payable could be portioned out and paid over a year rather than in a single lump sum.

Again, if you are a MAFter, your personal accountant will have advised you on this already if would be to your benefit. If you’re not sure whether it applies to you or not and want to talk it over with a friendly accountant, once again, we’re ready and happy to chat.

January 31, 2018

If, like most MAFters, you file your tax return online, then this is the big one. Note that January 31 is not merely the date to get your paperwork in, it is also the deadline for paying your tax bill, so it’s a good idea is to get your online self-assessment filed as early as possible so that you can allow time for any mishaps.

Existing MAFters will know already that filing your tax return online using our dashboard couldn’t be simpler. It’s quite literally a case of pushing a button. Having worked with your own dedicated accountant friend throughout the year, everything will already be in order – digitally processed and ready for sending straight to HMRC. Our platform links directly to theirs, so you’ll get an almost instantaneous reminder saying whether or not your return has been accepted. It’s that easy.
